Former Deputy Chief Justice Richard Buteera has emphasized the importance of collaboration between prosecutors and other government institutions to accelerate the resolution of court cases.
Speaking during the Annual Prosecutors’ Symposium held in Kampala under the theme “Enhancing Collaboration for Effective and Efficient Prosecution,” Buteera noted that teamwork between prosecutors, investigators, and other actors in the justice system is critical for efficiency.
He highlighted that such collaboration can help reduce case backlogs and improve the quality of investigations and prosecutions.
He also clarified that collaboration does not compromise institutional independence, stressing that each stakeholder must remain focused on fulfilling their designated roles.
On her part, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Jane Frances Abodo urged prosecutors to carry out their duties without fear, particularly in cases involving political parties, as long as procedures are followed and actions are grounded in law.
She cautioned against misconduct, warning that prosecutors must uphold ethical standards.
Abodo also acknowledged the challenge of limited staffing, noting that the shortage of prosecutors has resulted in heavy workloads, which in turn affects the implementation of disciplinary measures and overall performance.
The symposium seeks to strengthen cooperation across the justice sector, address systemic challenges, and promote best practices to ensure fair, efficient, and effective prosecution in Uganda.
