The Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, Rt. Rev. Bishop Joseph Antony Zziwa, has called on teachers and catechists to remain resilient, loving, and faithful in their vocation as educators.
Bishop Zziwa, who also serves as the Ordinary of Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese, emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from the Uganda Martyrs patrons of various professions and Catholic devotions.
He urged Catholics and professionals to emulate the exemplary lives of the Martyrs in their respective callings.
In particular, he highlighted Saint Andrew Kaggwa, the patron saint of catechists and teachers, as a model of dedication and sacrifice.
Bishop Zziwa recalled how Saint Andrew Kaggwa supported and taught his fellow Martyrs with zeal until his martyrdom on May 26, 1886, at Munyonyo under the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II.
The Bishop made these remarks while presiding over the Eucharistic Mass for this year’s pilgrimage of catechists and teachers at the Saint Andrew Kaggwa Shrine in Munyonyo.
He underscored the importance of courage and unwavering belief, encouraging educators to find inspiration in Saint Andrew Kaggwa’s steadfast faith and commitment.
He also urged teachers and catechists to deeply love both their faith and the children they teach.
Meanwhile, foot pilgrims from Mubende and Masaka are set to begin their journey to Namugongo on Wednesday, May 28.
Many others are already walking in preparation for the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations on June 3, which will be led this year by Lugazi Diocese.
The celebration will follow the theme inspired by the Jubilee Year declared by the late Pope Francis: “Oh Lord, let me see again—I, Your Pilgrim of”
