Religious Leaders Join fight against M-pox with launch of Faith-Based Epidemic Response Handbook

IRCU have joined hands with the MOH in fight of M-pox

Religious leaders under their umbrella body, the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU), have joined hands with the Ministry of Health to combat the spread of Monkeypox (M-pox) in the country.

The Ministry of Health declared outbreaks of M-pox and the Ebola-like Sudan Virus Disease in August 2024 and January 2025, respectively. As of April 2025, Uganda has recorded 4,913 confirmed M-pox cases and 37 related deaths.

In response to the escalating public health threat, IRCU has today launched a new publication titled “The Faith Leaders Handbook on Epidemics/Pandemics in Uganda.” The handbook provides vital information on the transmission, prevention, treatment, and awareness of M-pox and other infectious diseases.

Speaking during the launch event held at IRCU headquarters, Msgr. Charles Kasibante, a board member of IRCU, stated that the handbook will serve as a critical guide for religious leaders as they engage faith communities in combating misinformation and myths related to faith and healing.

He emphasized the importance of using trusted religious platforms such as sermons and liturgical gatherings to share accurate health information.

“This handbook empowers us to be informed voices in our communities. It will help us communicate the truth and promote practices that prevent the spread of M-pox and other diseases,” Msgr. Kasibante said.

Representing the Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, Dr. Henry Bossa Kyobe Incident Commander at the Ministry commended IRCU for the initiative. He noted that the voices of religious leaders carry great influence during health crises and praised the collaborative approach to public health education.
