As Uganda prepares to commemorate Martyrs Day on June 3, 2025, MTN Uganda has extended vital support to Lugazi Catholic Diocese, the lead organizer for this year’s celebrations.
The telecom company has donated UGX 15 million, 500 reflector jackets, and drinking water to assist pilgrims walking to Namugongo.
The donation was officially handed over on May 15 at the diocesan offices in Lugazi Municipality.
MTN’s Regional Business Manager, Ronald Richard Dhamulira, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting national religious events and said the company will continue offering assistance to other regions and churches as part of its contribution to the Martyrs Day celebration.
In addition to the donation, MTN has provided a MoMoPay code to help the diocese collect offerings and donations digitally.
The platform is intended to promote transparency, simplify contributions, and support better organization of the pilgrimage by enabling real-time tracking of pilgrims.
The donation was received by Msgr. Dr. Kayondo Richard, Vicar General of Mary Queen of Peace Cathedral in Lugazi, on behalf of Bishop Christopher Kakooza.
He expressed appreciation for MTN’s timely and essential support.
Msgr. Kayondo announced that the diocese expects over 25,000 foot pilgrims to participate in the journey to Namugongo.
The pilgrimage will begin on June 1 at 5:00 a.m., with pilgrims expected to arrive by 4:00 p.m. the same day.
Key convergence points along the route include Mbiko, Nyenga, and Naminya, with an overnight stay planned in Lugazi.
The next major stop will be in Nagalama, where additional pilgrims from Nkokojeru and nearby islands are expected to join.
The final meeting point will be at Sonde Parish before the last stretch to Namugongo.
Msgr. Kayondo noted that although pilgrimage budgets vary across a diocese, organizing such a large-scale spiritual journey remains a significant effort that relies heavily on both community and corporate support.
