MP Sarah Opendi questions heavy security deployment around Parliament

Tororo District Woman MP, Sarah Opendi, has raised concern over the increased security presence surrounding the Parliamentary precincts, describing it as excessive and unsettling.

During this morning’s plenary session, MP Opendi addressed Speaker Anita Among, expressing dismay at the unusually heightened security measures that greeted both legislators and members of the public.

Early in the day, road users and pedestrians around Parliament encountered multiple security checkpoints, an uncommon sight on a regular sitting day.

Opendi recounted her own experience, stating that she was subjected to several layers of security screening while trying to access Parliament.

She noted that, in a rare occurrence, she was asked to present her National Identification Card before being allowed entry through the main parliamentary gate, something she described as not only inconvenient but also cause for concern.

The increased security presence is widely believed to be linked to ongoing debates on the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Amendment Bill.

Opposition MPs have publicly pledged to resist the passage of the bill, particularly objecting to some of its more controversial provisions.

At the center of the dispute is a proposal that seeks to maintain the trial of civilians in military courts, particularly the Court Martial.

Critics argue that this provision undermines civilian judicial authority and violates fundamental human rights, including the right to a fair trial in civilian courts.

The debate over the bill continues to stir tension within Parliament, as security forces remain on high alert around the legislative building.
