Pope Leo XIV, just six days into his papacy, has met with media professionals and urged them to uphold truth, promote peace, and recognize the powerful role communication plays in shaping society’s culture.
The meeting, held in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall, brought together journalists who had been in Rome covering the death of Pope Francis, the papal conclave, and the beginning of Pope Leo XIV’s ministry.
The Pope thanked them for their dedication and tireless efforts during what he acknowledged were intense and emotional weeks for the Church and the world.
In his address, the Pope emphasized the vital importance of how communication is used in society.
He cautioned against divisive rhetoric and imagery that fuel conflict and polarization, encouraging the media to reject narratives rooted in hostility or partisanship.
Pope Leo XIV also expressed solidarity with journalists imprisoned for reporting the truth, calling for their release.
He underscored the role of a free press in supporting informed decision-making and democratic values, highlighting the risks many journalists face in pursuit of factual reporting.
He raised concerns over the growing confusion caused by ideologically driven language in modern discourse, pointing to the media’s responsibility to bring clarity, compassion, and integrity to public communication.
This address marks one of the Pope’s earliest public engagements and signals his intent to engage meaningfully with global media while reaffirming the Catholic Church’s commitment to freedom of expression and social harmony.
