Speaker among decries UNRA rationalization, cites rising road fatalities and infrastructure decline

Speaker Among decries UNRA

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among, has expressed deep concern over the recent rationalization of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), warning that the move is having a detrimental effect on the nation’s road infrastructure and public safety.

Her remarks follow a rise in road accidents across the country, which she linked to the worsening condition of roads.

She cited a tragic incident along the Entebbe–Munyonyo Expressway that claimed the life of prominent businessman Rajiv Ruparelia, among other Ugandans.

Addressing Parliament, Speaker Among emphasized the urgent need to address the deteriorating road network, stating that the rationalization of UNRA has led to a visible decline in road quality and maintenance.

She described the issue as a growing national crisis that demands immediate intervention.

In addition, the Speaker criticized the government for delays in releasing funds to road contractors.

She noted that these delays have severely hindered the timely completion of key road projects, further aggravating the current state of disrepair across the country.

In a decisive move, Speaker Among issued a directive to the Minister of Works, instructing the ministry to present a comprehensive report to Parliament by tomorrow.

The report must outline the current condition of roads in Kampala and explain the delays in disbursing funds, despite Parliament’s prior approval of the reallocation of former UNRA funds to the Ministry of Works.
