Government suspends YY Coach Buses for 15 days following fatal accidents

YY Coach Buses

The Ministry of Works and Transport has suspended all YY Coach Bus operations for 15 days, effective immediately, following a string of deadly accidents involving the company’s vehicles.

This move comes after two serious incidents raised alarms about passenger safety. On May 5, a YY bus with registration number UAV 701C overturned and burst into flames in Najja Village, Buikwe District, along the Katosi–Nyenga Road.

The tragic crash resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.

In another incident, a YY Coach bus registered as UAX 852F, en route from Kampala to Yumbe, collided with a vehicle in Ayango Village along the Pakwach–Arua Highway.

Six people died on the spot and several others sustained injuries.

State Minister for Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, announced the suspension, citing mechanical failures and driver negligence as the primary causes of the accidents.

He explained that the suspension will allow time for a full investigation into the incidents and for a review of the company’s operational standards to ensure public safety.

A special committee has been appointed to lead the investigation and assess YY Coaches’ compliance with transport regulations.

The company has been directed to provide detailed records on driver training, vehicle maintenance, and internal safety procedures as part of the inquiry.

Minister Byamukama reaffirmed the government’s commitment to passenger safety and said the investigation’s findings would inform future decisions regarding YY Coach’s return to operation and the broader regulation of public transport services.
