Uganda’s Catholic Church is mourning the passing of one of its most influential spiritual leaders, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Expedito Magembe, who died on May 9, 2025, at the age of 88.
Best known as the founding director of Mount Sion Prayer Centre in Bukalango, Monsignor Magembe leaves behind a legacy defined by deep spiritual leadership, powerful music, and decades of unwavering ministry.
His death was announced by the Archdiocese of Kampala through the Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Pius Male Ssentumbwe, on behalf of Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere.
While the cause of death was not disclosed, the faithful have been urged to keep him in their prayers as burial arrangements are being finalized.
For over five decades, Monsignor Magembe dedicated his life to guiding souls through prayer, healing, and reconciliation.
As the Archdiocese’s chief exorcist, he was known not only for confronting spiritual darkness but also for drawing thousands back to the Church particularly at a time when many were leaving for Pentecostal movements.
Through his renowned Sangaalo prayer sessions and the spiritual refuge of Mount Sion Bukalango, he created spaces where faith was reignited and healing found.
With his ever-present crucifix and large rosary, Monsignor Magembe symbolized a tireless commitment to Christ’s mission.
His contributions to sacred music are equally profound. A gifted composer, he is credited with nearly 1,000 hymns, many of which form the core of the MTO: Muje Tutendereze Mukama hymn book used across Luganda-speaking Catholic communities.
His music marked by deep theological insight and lyrical beauty continues to inspire worshippers across generations.
In 2024, he was honored with the prestigious Cherubim Musical Honour for his role in shaping Uganda’s liturgical music.
Even amid declining health in recent years, Monsignor Magembe remained a spiritual pillar.
In 2024, the Catholic community joined in celebrating his golden jubilee 50 years of priesthood an occasion that reaffirmed his lasting impact.
His ministry was not without challenges, including a false death rumor in January 2025, which highlighted the public’s deep emotional connection to him.
Yet until his final days, he remained committed to his calling.
Monsignor Expedito Magembe’s life was a testament to the power of faith, service, and song.
His voice, once resounding in prayer and praise, may now be silent, but his spirit continues to echo in Uganda’s churches, homes, and hearts.
