ULS calls on Attorney General to ensure release of NUP Bodyguard Eddy Mutwe, other political prisoners

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has issued a strong call to the Attorney General, Kiryowa Kiwanuka, urging the government to release all political prisoners, with a specific emphasis on Edward Ssebuufu, popularly known as Eddy Mutwe.

Ssebuufu is the chief bodyguard for Robert Kyagulanyi, the president of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Ssebuufu was reportedly abducted from his residence in Mukono under circumstances that remain unclear.

His disappearance has sparked widespread concern among opposition supporters, human rights advocates, and legal organizations.

In response, NUP has initiated legal proceedings, demanding his immediate release and questioning the legality of his detention.

Arthur Isiko, the Treasurer of the Uganda Law Society, emphasized the importance of the rule of law and respect for human rights.

He stated that as the government’s legal adviser, the Attorney General has a duty to guide the government in upholding these principles.

Isiko urged the Attorney General to advise the authorities to release individuals detained without due process, asserting that such actions undermine the integrity of Uganda’s legal framework.

The ULS’s call highlights ongoing concerns about political repression and the treatment of opposition figures in Uganda.

Human rights organizations continue to monitor the situation closely, advocating for transparency and adherence to legal standards in all cases of detention.
