The leader of the opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, has urged the international community, including the European Union, to join religious leaders in scrutinizing ongoing human rights violations and the shrinking space for media freedom in Uganda.

He made these remarks during activities commemorating World Press Freedom Day, scheduled for May 3rd, organized by the Uganda Parliamentary Press Association at Parliament.

Ssenyonyi emphasized that when ambassadors meet with the president and the Chief of Defense Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, they should demand explanations for the government’s continued human rights abuses against individuals and journalists.

Additionally, Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda warned media practitioners to prepare for the 2026 general elections, predicting increased human rights violations and targeted attacks on media reporters by security agencies.

The Government Chief Whip, Hamson Obua, called on journalists and media organizations to evaluate the government’s performance against the international bill of rights to identify areas needing improvement.
