Uganda marks International Labour Day; Opposition urges Parliament to pass Minimum Wage Bill

Moses Matovu, the party spokesperson

As Uganda commemorated International Labour Day on Thursday, the opposition National Economic Empowerment Dialogue (NEED) called on Parliament to prioritize passing the minimum wage bill.

According to Moses Matovu, the party spokesperson, the minimum wage bill is essential for ensuring that Ugandan workers have a suitable working environment and receive fair compensation for their labor.

He emphasized that a significant portion of workers in Uganda struggle to make ends meet due to low wages, which has a ripple effect on the entire economy, given that workers are the backbone of economic growth.

Additionally, Matovu expressed support for the government’s efforts to improve the education system.

He highlighted the importance of producing skilled individuals capable of starting their own businesses under the new curriculum, which promotes practical skills.

This approach is seen as a step toward reducing the high unemployment rate among educated youth.

Uganda joined the global community in celebrating International Labour Day today, with national celebrations held at Nakaale Grounds in Nakapiripiriti District.

The event’s theme was “Consolidating on the Gains of the Parish Development Model (PDM) for Increased Productivity and Inclusive Job Creation.”
