In a pivotal gathering, the College of Cardinals convened in Vatican City for their sixth General Congregation, where they addressed critical issues facing the Church and outlined the schedule for the upcoming conclave.
During the meeting held in the New Synod Hall this morning, 183 Cardinals were in attendance, including over 120 electors.
Approximately 20 Cardinals spoke, sharing insights shaped by their diverse experiences from various continents and regions, highlighting the pressing challenges the Church must confront.
Notably, two electors will be absent from the conclave due to health concerns, while Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu announced his decision to abstain from the proceedings in accordance with Pope Francis’s wishes.
In a united response to recent events, the College of Cardinals expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support following the passing of Pope Francis, sending a message of thanks to the global community.
As preparations intensify, the conclave is scheduled to commence on May 7, mirroring the timeline established during the 2013 election.
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, will lead the votive Mass for the Election of the Pope at 10:00 AM in St. Peter’s Basilica.
The formal opening of the conclave will occur at 4:30 PM with a prayer service in the Pauline Chapel.
