80% of human trafficking cases recorded in Uganda involve children, according to the Office of Directorate of Public Prosecution’s (ODPP) Trafficking in Persons Mobile Application Platform (TIPMAP).
Derek Basalirwa Kigenyi, National Deputy Coordinator of the Directorate of Prevention of Trafficking in Persons in the Ministry of Internal Affairs revealed that the app has recorded 3,777 cumulative cases since its launch in 2023.
A total of 516 suspects have been convicted, with males accounting for 77.2% and females 21.4% of those convicted.
Kigenyi reports 5,872 victims, including those trafficked and their relatives.
Sex trafficking and labor trafficking are the most common forms, with victims mostly being girls aged 18-29, followed by those aged 30-49.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has also warned about a new form of cross-border human trafficking involving Somali nationals trafficked through Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan, Sudan, and up to Libya.
