Pope Francis was laid to rest in Rome following a solemn funeral ceremony at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.
Tens of thousands of mourners attended the service, which was officiated by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re.
The funeral was attended by global leaders, including US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and UK’s Prince William.
The ceremony was marked by unprecedented security measures, with over 2,500 police officers and 1,500 soldiers deployed around the Vatican. Pope Francis’s wooden coffin, inlaid with a large cross, was carried by 14 white-gloved pallbearers through the main doors of St Peter’s Basilica.
After the funeral, Pope Francis was buried at the Basilica of St Mary Major, as per his wishes.
The burial brings to a close the chapter on his 12-year leadership of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.
