Bishop Emeritus Giuseppe Filippi of Kotido Diocese has urged Christian lawyers to embody compassion and mercy in their legal practices.
Speaking during his homily at a Mass held in memory of Pope Francis at the Uganda Law Society headquarters, he reminded legal professionals that their vocation should not deter them from following Christ’s teachings.
Bishop Filippi called on lawyers to offer opportunities for rehabilitation to offenders, promoting peace and hope within their work, reflecting the values championed by Pope Francis.
He emphasized the vital role of forgiveness, encouraging lawyers to forgive those who wrong them, following the example Jesus set.
In a related event, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Sita, Director of Justice and Peace Department in Kampala Archdiocese, reflected on Pope Francis’s legacy, urging Catholic lawyers to emulate his commitment to justice.
He highlighted the need for legal professionals to provide pro bono services, as many individuals are unable to afford legal assistance.
Fr. Sita articulated that Jesus’ ministry was rooted in love rather than strict adherence to the law, encouraging lawyers to adopt a similarly compassionate approach in their practices.
Both leaders discussed their messages at a Uganda Law Society event honoring the late Pope Francis.
