The Electoral Commission of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has issued a warning to its members regarding the potential consequences of running as independents after losing in party primaries.
This caution was articulated by James Tweheyo, the commissioner in charge of Karamoja, in anticipation of the upcoming internal elections.
The directive underscores the critical significance of party unity and loyalty, urging members to rally behind candidates officially endorsed by the party.
To reinforce this message, the commission has introduced a new requirement mandating that party members sign a consent form when participating in primaries.
This form stipulates that they cannot run as independents if they do not succeed in securing the party nomination.
Tweheyo also indicated that the commission is prepared to take disciplinary actions against any members who violate these guidelines by opting to run independently.
The party’s primaries are set to commence on April 24, 2025, with the expression of interest phase at the grassroots level concluding by May 6, 2025, ahead of the polling date.
