The Uganda Police Force is seeking more than 200 billion shillings to implement Phase 3 of its Closed-Circuit Television – CCTV system.
This revelation was made by the Force’s accounting officer, Aggrey Wunyi, during his appearance before the Parliamentary Defense Committee together with other officials, including the State Minister of Internal Affairs, Gen. David Muhoozi, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Byakagaba Abbas.
According to Aggrey, the requested funds will address gaps left in phases one and two of the CCTV project, particularly in cities, along highways, and in developing municipalities.
The committee was also informed of the need for a robust legal framework to operationalize the CCTV cameras.
State Minister Muhoozi emphasized that while they currently rely on existing laws, they are insufficient.
He pointed out instances where they have faced difficulties in extracting footage from individual cameras due to the absence of clear legal provisions.
In addition, Minister Muhoozi clarified allegations that members of the public have been asked to pay for footage evidence from police camera control rooms stating that this practice is illegal and unacceptable emphasizing that it violates the code of conduct for officers to release footage to private individuals for a fee.
