Police have released the 2024 Annual Crime Report indicating over 26,000 new cases registered last year.
Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Tom Magambo, the Director of Criminal Investigations while highlighting the cases recorded, noted that registered a total of 26,328 cases and are currently handling 43,000 ongoing cases from last year.
He adds that they had 46,000 cases that were not pursued, either because they were civil matters or had already been resolved.
Magambo says they successfully took a total of 81,750 cases to court and among these; they had several convictions, which is a significant achievement for the CID.
He says in terms of theft, statistics show 61,529 cases registered, which represents a decrease of 6.6 per cent compared to what they reported last year.
According to the report, on assault by the end of 2024, a total of 29,580 cases were registered and this was a decrease of 1 per cent from what CID reported last year.
Magambo says that a total number of cases submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions last year was 119,000 and they managed to get some cases dismissed, often due to technicalities, and these amounted to about 10,000 cases.
However, he says that they still have a backlog of 90,000 cases under investigation, but they are confident that by 2025, they will report significant progress on the resolution of these cases.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abas Byakagaba says the priority this year is on improving the mindset and operational readiness of personnel to perform their duties, including enhancing their welfare, housing, health and capacity building to ensure professionalism.
