Voters’ Register Update Exercise Starts across the Country

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Justice Simon Byabakama

The Independent Electoral Commission (EC) targets to register 22 million Ugandans into the voters’ register by the end of the update of the register exercise that kicked off on Monday January 20th and will run till February 10th 2025.

This has been disclosed by the Chairperson of the Commission, Justice Simon Byabakama during the launch of the update of the voters’ register at Kamwokya Market 1 polling station in Kampala, saying that they expect the voters’ number to increase by four million people as well as the number of polling stations.

It should be recalled that 18.4 million Ugandans were registered ahead of the 2021 general elections and 37,000 polling stations were demarcated across the country.

Byabakama calls on Ugandans to embrace this exercise because once the deadline of 10th February passes, they will not have any extension and appealed to them to remain peaceful throughout this exercise.

Byabakama also explained that they are registering new voters based on data from the National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA) for first time voters who are 18 years of age and there is no need for worry from Ugandans.
