The opposition Democratic Party (DP) is the latest party to express interest in fielding a candidate in the race to replace the fallen Kawempe North Member of Parliament, Muhammad Ssegirinya.
In his address to journalists at the party offices along Balintuma Road in Mengo, Kampala on Tuesday, the DP Secretary General Dr. Gerald Blacks Siranda disclosed that they have received a number of applications from various party members expressing interest to take part in the upcoming by-election but the party has to take them through primaries which will decide who will hold the DP flag in the race.
DP fielded a candidate one Mathias Mulumba in the 2021 general elections who garnered 1,050 votes against Muhammad Ssegirinya who won the race with 41,197 votes to beat eight other candidates.
Siranda now says they want to get a serious candidate to win the by-election before extending his condolences to the family and the entire Kawempe North electorate for the loss of their area MP Ssegirinya.
Meanwhile, Siranda has called upon all party members, mostly the youths who have clocked 18 years, to embrace the ongoing National Registration and Updating of Voters’ Register that started on January 20th to February 10th 2025 if they are to fully participate in the 2026 general elections.
