The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has appointed Butambala County Member of Parliament Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi the new acting Vice-President of the party for Buganda Region to succeed Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba.
Mpuuga, the former Leader of Opposition in Parliament, fell out with the party leadership last year following controversy over a 500 million Shillings service award and he has since established a political pressure group; the Democratic Alliance.
After Kivumbi’s appointment, the NUP party President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu challenged Him to walk the talk of the party to fulfill its objectives.
He has also advised Muwanga Kivumbi to clean the party image with Buganda kingdom which is currently tarnished by people he referred to as ‘opportunists’.
Meanwhile, Kivumbi has thanked his colleagues and the party for giving him a chance to offer leadership and pledged to help the party fulfill its objectives.
Meanwhile, there were other appointments which were announced and these include; Jacqueline Tukamushaba who was appointed Vice-President for Western Region replacing the late Jolly Mugisha, Harriet Ageno takes over as Secretary for Policy, succeeding the late Toret Akecha, and Benjamin Katana was named as the NUP representative to the National Consultative Forum among others.
Their appointments will be in acting capacity until the party holds its delegates’ conference in June this year.
Meanwhile, the former Vice President of the National Unity Platform in Buganda Region, Mathias Mpuuga has wished well for his successor the Butambala County MP Muwanga Kivumbi.
The Entebbe Municipality legislator Michael Kakembo, who is also a member of the Mpuuga-led Democratic Alliance also welcomed Kivumbi’s appointment saying that given his experience he has the capacity though his appointment has come at a time when NUP is challenged with factions and disrespect from a section of NUP supporters.
They all disclosed this after meeting National Independent Electoral Commission officials at its headquarters in the Industrial Area, Kampala regarding the electoral reforms they are seeking to be made ahead of the next general elections.
