The Minister of Internal Affairs, Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abbas Byakagaba to produce a comprehensive report on the killing of six suspected robbers in Kamwokya, Kampala.
This comes after Kampala Metropolitan Police this week confirmed that the suspects were targeting a female client who had withdrawn an unspecified amount of money from a bank at Acacia Mall.
Lwemiyga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo while raising the concern about the incident during an interface between the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee of Parliament, said the suspects could have been apprehended without being killed.
Similarly, the Shadow Minister of Internal Affairs, Betty Nambooze has criticized Otafiire’s directive, arguing that it’s insufficient and immediate action should be taken against the responsible police officers.
In reply, Gen. Otafiire emphasized that executing unarmed Ugandans is against policy thus demanding an explanation from the police regarding the recent executions, stating that the police must come out to explain their actions.
Otafiire responded that he cannot rush into arrests without completing investigations into the matter.
