The Ministry for Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) has confirmed that the agricultural sector has grown by 5.1%, hence contributing 24.6% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the Financial Year 2023/2024.
Agriculture continues to employ approximately 70% of the Ugandan population directly and indirectly.
This has been disclosed by the State Minister for Animal Industry, Bright Rwamirama in his presentation on the performance of ministries, agencies and departments under the NRM Manifesto promises for this five year political term of 2021 to date.
The GDP increased from shs 36.360 trillion in the financial year 2020/21 to shs 49.722 trillion in the financial year 2023/24.
He also explains that the value of agricultural exports registered a tremendous growth of 42% from USD 1.678 billion in Financial Year 2020/2021 to USD 2.535 billion in Financial Year 2023/24.
Minister Rwamirama attributes this performance to increased volumes and quality of coffee, dairy, fish and maize products exported to other markets.
