NUP Asks Parliament to Bin MP Lumu’s Bill

MP Lumu in Parlianment

The National Unity Platform (NUP) party has strongly opposed the Administration of Parliament Amendment Bill, 2024, characterizing it as a continuation of the hostility and antagonism towards the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi by the current Parliament leadership.

The NUP Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya expressed these concerns while presenting the party’s views to the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee.

Rubongoya questioned the timing of the bill, introduced by the Mityana South MP, Richard Lumu which proposes electing the Leader of Opposition instead of having the position appointed for by the leading opposition party in the August House.

He also accused Parliament’s leadership of giving special priority to the bill despite Lumu’s evident lack of preparation, which raises questions about the true motive behind it.

Furthermore, NUP criticized Lumu’s persistence in pushing for this controversial law, despite its rejection by main opposition parties, including the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT).
