The Women’s Situation Room WSR Uganda a mechanism that mobilizes women and youth to promote peaceful electoral processes before, during and after 2021 general elections.

This is in line with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, and they want the media to be an instrument of peace in the coming general elections.

In a media engagement at Golden Turip in Kampala a group of “15 wise women” through their spokesperson Elizabeth Lwanga said their findings have pinned the media in Uganda for fueling divisionism, partisan politics and sectarian tendencies.

Lwanga says if no professional standards are enforced starting with journalists, individual media houses and the regulators, the noble role of the media is bound to cause chaos in the coming elections.

They contend that the Media should be used to change the mindset, encourage democratic principles and rights and freedom to choose leaders of their choice who will transform the country.

As WRS have selected 30 districts identified as hot spot areas during elections, 1500 youth and 1500 women who are to be trained as peer to peer educators of peace, peace promoters and at the same time election observers who will report to the 4 situation rooms one in Kampala, Gulu, Mbale and Mbarara that will be fully facilitated and equipped with legal, media, gender and security analysts who will compile information on daily basis to inform Ugandans about all situations as they happen during elections but with the ultimate goal of promoting a peaceful election.

Founded by the Angie Brooks International Centre in Liberia, the Women’s Situation Room that was first implemented in 2011 during the Presidential elections in Liberia, replicated her role in Uganda during the 2016 Presidential elections and in five other African countries which include: Senegal, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana on acknowledging that their efforts have helped to build peace.
