Ministry of Water and Environment has disclosed that it approved that cancellation of 326 illegal land titles in the wetlands across the country.

Addressing the media in Kampala, the State Minister for Environment Dr. Mary Goretti Kitutu said that they listed the illegal land titles in wetlands and handed it over to the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development for cancellation.

Early this month, the State Minister for Lands, Housing and Urban Development Dr Chris Baryomunsi confirmed to have resolved to cancel all land titles that were issued to developers in protected areas especially in Masaka Sub-region.

Kitutu further says that some of the encroachers having got information of the cancellation, they got court injunctions stopping them from being evicted, which has delayed the cancellation process.

Meanwhile, the Minister noted that they are soon presenting the New Environment Impact Assessment Policy to cabinet with tight policies that will curb the continued encroachment in wetlands after having lost over 32 percent of the wetlands in the last ten years.

She revealed this ahead of the wetlands day celebrations on 2nd February that will be held in Limoto Primary school in Pallisa district.
