Uganda has been hailed for its hospitality and supportive policies in the management of refugees.

In a meeting attended by officials from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees UNHCR along with members of the Pan African Parliament that is taking place in Midrand, South Africa, Uganda’s representative Jacqueline Amongin says Uganda has granted refugees freedom, the right to seek employment and land for farming that is not elsewhere.

The meeting under the theme; “Year of Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons: Towards durable solutions to forced displacement in Africa”, is intended to examine the performance and support to refugees that stand at more than a million people from mainly the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, South Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi.

Uganda through her National Development Plan II, all refugees are highly protected although demands for social support from other regional bodies like the Southern African Development Community (SADC), East African Community and the African Union is needed according to the UNHCR country representative George Kuchio .

Kuchio also credited other African countries that have lent a hand to refugees like South Africa, Mozambique, Lesotho, and Swaziland for their support in the area however Hon. Babirye Kadogo from (Uganda) called for a permanent solution to the problem of refugees because they are stressing host countries and communities..

Hon. Mc Henry Venaani, the Chairperson of the Committee on Trade, Customs and Immigration Matters said “The search for durable and sustainable solutions to forced displacement constitutes an important task to all leaders and the international community to assist in ending the causes of refugees
