The Executive Director of the Anti Corruption Coalition Uganda Cissy Kagaba has appealed to the Electoral Commission to enforce the electoral laws in the fight against corruption in line with the 2021 general elections.

This follows the release of corruption perception index 2019 by Transparency International Uganda, indicating that Uganda has made slight improvement in the fight against corruption placing it at the 137th position out of the 180 countries that is 12 positions down from 149th position.

Uganda’s achievement has been attributed to efforts by the government and Civil Society pronouncements against corruption, filing of more cases about corruption in courts of law and works of the State House Anti Corruption Unit headed by Lt. Col. Edith Nakalema.

In Africa somalia has been ranked as the most corrupt country scoring 9% followed by South Sudan with 12% and Sudan with 16% among others while In East Africa Rwanda has once again emerged the least corrupt country scoring 51%, Tanzania scoring 37%, Uganda and Kenya scored 28%.

Kagaba says that as the country heads to 2021 general elections, politicians tend to engage in voter bribery and in most cases those aspiring for higher positions in leadership are not charged in courts of laws.

She explains that electoral commission should also learn from past electoral cases that have been taken to courts of law so as to have better elections in the 2021 elections.
