As the country prepares to join the rest of the international community in commemorating the World AIDS Day on December 1st, government has attributed the persistent challenge of fully tracking HIV patients to failure to have a unique identifier.

Dr. Nelson Musoba, the Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC) Director General explains that there is a tendency of changing locations among some people after testing positive while others abscond from picking medication for fear of stigmatization which makes it hard for them to be traced.

According to him, such inefficiencies have fuelled a rise in new HIV cases in the country with 53,000 people got contracted and over 21,000 died of the disease in 2019 only.

He further notes that they are trying their best to devise means of following up every person that visits a health centre and tests positive of HIV to ensure they are on medication.

The Minister for Presidency Esther Mbayo says that Uganda’s national commemorations will be virtualized due to the ongoing political campaign and the existence of Covid-19 hence warning the public to protect them from getting infected ahead of the festive season.

This year’s global World AIDS Day will be commemorated under the theme, ‘National Solidarity and a Shared Responsibility towards Ending AIDS’
