Justice and Peace Commission at the Uganda Catholic Secretariat have committed to helping Karamoja communities get a fair deal from the exploration process that is taking place in their area.

According to the Program Officer Justice and Peace Pasca Apo, Tororo Cement Factory that is said to be operating on a mining lease of 20.1 square Km for the last 15 years is said to be cheating the local communities contrary to the needs of the cooperate social responsibility.

The MOU is said to have agreed to see that communities are provided with public utilities like school, access roads, protection of environment but all these are not provided to the extent of not even compensating any worker in case of an accident while excavating stones.

Apo says the communities are exploited with crude Waragi instead of paying them justly which is unacceptable. She has vowed that the Catholic Church together with Eco, Safer World and the Local government will continue engaging Tororo Cement to give a fair deal to the Karamoja community.
