Three Members of Parliament have been further remanded to Luzira prisons over the charges of conspiracy to defraud and diversion of public resources as the prosecution verifies their bail application documents. 


They are Igara East MP Michael Mawanda, Elgon County MP Mudimi Wamakuyu, and Busiki County MP Paul Akamba.


They are charged with Leonard Kavundira, the Assistant Registrar of Cooperatives in the Ministry of Trade, and a lawyer Julius Kirya Taitankoko.


According to the charges sanctioned by the Director of Public Prosecutions Jane Frances Abodo, Mawanda, Wamakuyu, Akamba, Kirya, and Kavundira conspired to defraud 7.3 billion shillings that was meant for compensation of Buyaka Growers Cooperatives Society Limited. The charges were allegedly committed between 2019 and 2023.


Today, the accused reappeared before the Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate Joan Aciro to apply for bail however it was unsuccessful after the state prosecutor Aldrine Asingwire asked court for more time to verify the bail documents.


All the accused persons have presented their sureties in court today who includes Hassan Bassajjabalaba, Derrick Kabura MP Bushenyi Ishaka, Miika Bilungi have represented Mawanda, then  Seth Wambede,  Denis Nyangweso  and Beatrice  Kayegi  presented Wamakuyu, Robert Kasolo, David  Isabirye, Kisule Mugabi presented Akamba.


The case will resume on 18th July 2024, when court will peruse through the bail documents.


Prosecution alleges that Mawanda in October 2021, in Kampala diverted public funds amounting to 1,50,000,000 shillings for purposes unrelated to that for which the resources were intended, while Wanakuyu and Akamba diverted 2.3 Billion Shillings and 200 million shillings respectively for their benefit. Kirya allegedly diverted 2.2 billion shillings.


The suspects also conspired to defraud 3.4 billion shillings meant for the Buyaka Cooperative Society.


They were arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, headed by Brigadier General Henry Isoke.


Thousands of Patriotic League of Uganda -PLU supporters led by PLU Secretary General David Kabanda who is Kasambya County Member of Parliament, have camped at the court premises donning t-shirts with the image of Mawanda and General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.  Mawanda is the Chairperson of the Disciplinary Committee in PLU.
