The Vice Chancellor Makerere University, Prof Barnabus Nawangwe has suspended three students for allegedly planning to stage a demonstration over the 15 per cent tuition increment.

The suspended students are Johnson Emmanuel Obbo, a student of Bachelor of Arts in Education, Frank Bwambale a student of Journalism and Communication and David Musiri a student of Bachelor of Office and Information Management and instructions have been extended to the university chief security officer to ensure they vacate the university premises immediately.

In a letter signed by Prof Nawangwe on 10th September to each of the students, the three were accused of spreading potentially damaging information that could make other students to rebel against the university management.

He said the students were authoring several anonymous messages on social media platforms as “young thug” with the aim of hurting both the university image and bringing student leaders of 84th Student Guild Council into disrepute.”

The VC also blames the trio for having participated in a demonstration that took place on the 20th August in Lumumba Hall despite the fact that they were not residences of that particular hall.

According to the letter, the students “On the 7th  this month allegedly planned illegal demonstration at the Freedom Square during which they also went to the office of the VC and threatened his staff with bodily harms. “ He further says the students on 14th August disrespectfully replied his polite caution signaling that was not ready to reform.”

The VC however noted that the three students will be invited for a further discussion on that matter on a date that will be communicated by the University Disciplinary Committee.
