Police is still holding more than 60 taxis that were impounded in Kampala alone for lack of all the required clearances for them to get back on the road.

The drivers were found loading passengers at gazetted and non-gazetted parks yet they had not registered with Kampala Capital City Authority –KCCA and ministry of works to secure route charts.

Some of the drivers were found carrying passengers but they could not show their registration documents. Such taxis were stopped and impounded.

Patrick Onyango, also Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, said some taxis had been impounded but could not confirm the actual number. He, however, said impounded taxis had been parked at various police stations in Kampala metropolitan.

Both taxi and bus drivers were required to fill a registration form detailing their name, National Identity Card Number and the KCCA City Operator Identification Number, route number and contact.

Other requirements included a photocopy of the vehicle logbook or a sales agreement, PSV tax, National Identity Card of taxi owner and driving permit of the driver.

Taxis and Buses that form a larger part of the public transport system resumed operations today after 75 days of suspension announced by President Museveni to control the spread of Coronavirus.

A few that had fulfilled the requirements both taxis and buses doubled the fares for example where a taxi has been charging 2000/= in town service it has been increased to 4000/= and long routes where it was 20,000/= it was increased to 40,000/= or 50,000/=
