The Uganda Police Force has partnered with the European Union to train crime intelligence officers to fight organized transnational crimes.

The transnational organized crimes include drug trafficking was valued at USD 3.3bn, apart from human trafficking, money laundering, illegal weapon trade among others which pose a threat in the world.

The officers who are to undergoing training have been selected from two departments, that is, criminal investigation department and crime intelligence department according to the Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura while opening the 5-day capacity building course of intelligence officers from Uganda, Eritrea and Sudan.

Kayihura said transnational organized crimes had for long been a challenge in the region especially in detecting and investigating them give the conflicts in the surrounding countries DR Congo and South Sudan.

He said: “Illicit drugs such as heroin and others have infiltrated the country hence intoxicating the youths which has led them into crimes insisting on building the police capacity to counter the crime.”

Officials from the European Union will instruct the officers at Entebbe Imperial Golf Course Hotel, where the trainings will be conducted as part of their commitment to address organized crime in Uganda, Malawi, Kenya and Niger, according to the EU ambassador to Uganda Attilio Pacifici
