The National Planning Authority – NPA expects the country to record a reverse number of new COVID-19 cases in the next two weeks, with a weekly total of over 8,700 new cases and a daily average of above 1,200 cases projected for the week ending 15th January, 2021.

 

In the past weeks, the number of new COVID-19 cases has continued to increase but the cases for hospitalization have remained low according to NPA

 

The country recorded a total of 10,174 new cases for the week ending 8th January 2021, an increase of about 30% the number of new cases recorded the previous week.

 

Dr Abraham Muwanguzi, the NPA Head of Science Planning, says in a weekly Covid-19 case projection release that a weekly total of 8,094 new cases are projected for the week ending January 22nd, with a daily average of 1,156 new cases.

 

According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, as of January 7th, 2022, the number of people in both private and government hospitals due to COVID-19 was 299, and of these, only 18 were in Intensive Care Units in public health facilities compared to the second wave peak by June, 30th 2021 where the number of general hospitalizations and ICU admissions were 1,081 and 299, respectively.

 

This implies that the hospital admissions are less by 72.3% and 84.3% for general hospitalization and ICU, respectively, in this 3rd wave compared to the second wave in June 2021.
