The National Identification Registration Authority -NIRA has enlisted Police support to break up a racket that has hijacked the registration process for issuance of National Identification Cards and replacing lost ones. 

The Crime Intelligence Unit of Police -CI has already arrested five key players. Another twenty members of the network have been identified and the search for them has intensified. Sources have indicated that the CI has spread its net across the country because the matter of IDs is sensitive as it impacts on national security.

Members of the public have been posting on social media platforms expressing their dissatisfaction over the way NIRA offices are being taken over my crooks charging them money three times the 50,000 shillings stipulated for replacement of lost Identity Card or birth certificate which are forged.

Gilbert Kadilo, NIRA’s communications director confirmed the operation against such scrupulous members saying that NIRA offices in Kololo, Makindye, Lubaga and Kampala Central are the most infiltrated by search persons who are running a parallel registration and issuance of genuine national IDs within the state structure.

Four others already netted are John Sekasi, Daniel Mwesigwa, Joan Nakawunde and Gloria Kamasazi, have been arrested at NIRA in Makindye Division.It is reported crime intelligence has a list of more than 20 other culprits they are hunting for.
