President Yoweri Museveni says they went to the bush in 1980 over serious reasons hence the need to give a report on what has been achieved so far.

He revealed this during the NRA/M Liberation day celebrations at Kololo ceremonial grounds which have been held scientifically due to the still existing threat of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Museveni said Uganda’s economy by July 2022 will be worthy 44 billion US Dollars compared to the 1.5 billion dollar economy they inherited in 1986, means it has grown 29 times in size.

He says Uganda missed by a whisker to attain the middle income status mainly due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The President has also thanked Ugandans for adhering to the strict guidelines and restrictions for almost two years aimed at curbing the spread and impact of Covid-19 which he says generally has been successful.

He scoffed at international media outlets for only focusing on the negative impacts of the lockdown instead of the positives that have been registered.

On the contentious issue of allowing pregnant and breastfeeding children back to school, the President promised to hold more discussions in cabinet but castigated those demonizing these children some of whom it wasn’t from their own making to end up in such scenarios.

Meawhile, Museveni also touched on the issue of the increased coups on Governments in West Africa in countries like Mali, Guinea and most recently Burkina Faso which he blamed on foreign forces which antagonized the Sahel region after attacking Libya.

He has called on Africa leaders to reach out and tap into Uganda’s experience in tackling such issues with a mind of a common agenda for the African continent.

On the issue of security within the region Museveni, committed to solving once and for all what he calls a small problem in DR.Congo of the Allied Democratic Forces militias hiding in the Kivu province from where they have been planning attacks against civilians.

This year’s NRA/M Liberation day celebration was organized under the theme, “The 36 NRM/NRA victory day; A Call to Duty for All Patriots to Contribute towards Uganda’s Social Economic Transformation”.

At the celebration, 50 people including among others; Prof. Patrick Ogwang, who founded Covidex, Dr. Joseph Kigula Mugambe a radiologist at Mulago Hospital, Dr. Joseph Ekodoi a consultant surgeon at Soroti hospital who saved conjoined twins, Media Academician Prof. Monica Chibita and Uganda’s gold medalists at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics; Jacob Kiplimo and Peruth Chemutai were honoured with medals in recognition of their distinguished service.
