The Igara East Member of Parliament Michael Mawanda has been challenged by parliamentary Legal committee on his move to impose office term limits only on the office of the Deputy Governor Bank of Uganda leaving out the office of the Governor.

In the new amendments, Mawanda proposes in the BoU act is the inserting of a close introducing two term limits on the office of the deputy governor renewable once which the committee members have questioned asking the motive behind the selective discrimination and why not even the office of the governor.

Apparently the office of the governor is permanent upon an appointment and the discretion of firing the governor lies in the hands of the appointment authority that is the president.

However, Mawanda in reply to the committee said that being the office of the governor is a sensitive position he opted not to term of office thus leaving the matter to both the committee and parliament to decide on whether to introduce term of office for governor or not.

Meanwhile, in other amendments, Mawanda proposes that the Governor should be stop serving both as the governor and chairman of BoU board, but the President to appoint board chairperson subjected to parliamentary approval.

The chairperson of the board should have the same qualifications at the level of the governor, the governor should be a member of the board, and the deputy governor shouldn’t sit on the board etc.
