Most Reverend Paul Ssemogerere has taken possession of Kampala Archdiocese at a colourful ceremony held this morning at the sacred heart of Jesus Cathedral Lubaga.

The taking of possession was done by the Papal Nuncio Archbishop Luigi Bianco and the retire Papal Nuncio to Belgium Archbishop Augustine Kasujja immediately after the Papal letter appointing him was read before the board of consulters and the congregation present.

He was handed the crosier, also called the pastoral staff and a mitre or liturgical headdress that were visibly seen by the congregation before representatives of the priests, mothers and superior generals of the religious institutions and head of laity laid before him to promise obedience and elegancy.

The Papal Nuncio Luigi Bianco prayed for him to fulfill the noble role and responsibilities ahead of him.

Archbishop Augustine Kasujja read the linage of all the Bishops who have ever led Kampala Archdiocese even before it was elevated to this status but ordained from the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral Lubaga right from Bishop Joseph Cabana.

Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere 65, is the fourth Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese. He is a priest of Kampala Archdiocese ordained a priest on 3 June 1983 at Kampala, by Cardinal Emmanuel Nsubuga, Archbishop of Kampala.

He served as a priest in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kampala, until 4 June 2008 where he has served until January 25th 2022 following his appointment by Papal Francis on December 9, 2021 as the new Archbishop of Kampala. He is replacing Archbishop Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga who died in April 2021.

Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere was born in on 30 June 1956 at Kisubi, in present-day Wakiso District Central region to the late Alipio Kamwanyi Luvule of Lugave clan and Angelina Namirembe.

Archbishop Ssemogerere has chosen a motto written in latin; ‘ Crescamus in vitam Christi’ that we may grow in life of Jesus Christ. Tweyongere okukula mubulamu Obwachritu
