Men under the Men’s Forum against Domestic Violence Uganda are requesting government to make some amendments of loosening on the stringent punishments stipulated in the recently passed Sexual Offences Bill.

The bill which was passed in May this year stipulates that persons convicted of sexual offences will have their data registered with the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) and also defines things like making any sound or gesture, uttering any word, making direct or indirect sexual advances or requests whether verbal or written among others as offences.

The punishment for sex offenders in this Act is a fine of Shs40m, one year in jail or not more than 10years depending on the offence.

Addressing the media in Kampala ahead of the Fathers’ Day commemoration on June 21 under Covid-19 pandemic partial lockdown, Robert Ndawula, the Deputy Executive Director for Men’s Forum says that the penalties in this act are too harsh for men that they need to be loosened.

In regards to Covid-19, Ndawula asks government to provide financial relief to families if relief support is to be extended to Ugandans instead of the food items given out last time that was of poor standards.
