Experts believe that there is a need for attitudinal change towards pursuing mathematics in Uganda especially among women.

Mathematics remains a core foundation subject for learners but it is also one of the most dreaded, especially since it is introduced at a very early age.

As a result, many learners develop a bias that affects their future performance even when they might be skilled at the subject.

Prof. Paul Mugambi, the First Mathematics professor in East Africa while speaking to journalists at the two days 1st Workshop and International Conference on Computational Fluid Dynamics and Mathematical Modeling –WICCOMM conducted at Kampala International University –KIU Kansanga in Makindye division, said that parents and academicians should embark on encouraging women to pursue math since they have the capacity to pass it.

He further says the National Curriculum Development Center –NCDC should also adopt a program of conducting annual refresher courses to Mathematics Teachers for them to get updated mathematical knowledge and skills to offer to students.

Prof. Janice Desire Busingye, the KIU Deputy Vice Chancellor in Charge of Finance and Administration hailed the Uganda Mathematics Society –UMS for all the outreach and mentorship initiatives that have increased on the number of female students pursuing mathematics, but calling upon on the parents to support such campaigns since math cuts all areas of life.
