The delay to pay salary enhancement arrears of support staff at Makerere University is causing tension.

This follows the release of the 4.3 billion shillings meant for salary enhancement for support staff in salary scales M10-M22 across all public universities.

The money was part of the 33.8 billion shillings that government released early this year following threats by the staff to lay down their tools if the money wasn’t paid.

Out of the 4.3 billion shillings to support staff across the 11 public universities in the country, Makerere University’s share was 1.7 billion shillings for 1,398 support staff, which according to sources has not been paid.

The Chairperson of Makerere Chapter of National Union of Education Institutions (NUEI), Bruce Twesigye, says the staff is concerned that the institution might add some names on the initial list of beneficiaries as it releases the first 1.7 billion although Charles Barugahare, the University Accounting describes the statements as negative propaganda.
