It has emerged that Government is to pay Local Defense Unit (LDU) personnel 200,000/= shillings each per month contrary to the first information that each was to bag 300,000/= per month.

The Chief of Defense Forces General David Muhoozi informed the MPs on the defense committee that their salary has been based on the current payment scale meant for auxiliary (support) forces as per the UPDF Act.

The revelation comes after Uganda peoples Defense Force-UPDF have closed the first phase of recruiting 240,000 LDUs as directed by President Museveni in the areas of Kampala and Wakiso to beef up security.

Muhoozi also informed the committee that the LDU’s are not entitled to pension and gratuity but they will instead be paid something related to a six months’ pay on retirement.

However, the MPs were not convinced on the amount of money to be paid each LDU although General Muhoozi said it’s not a big task since they are to operate within their areas of residence.
