Security personnel in Kyotera District have arrested more than 60 people for allegedly participating in street protests.

They were arrested on Thursday from different parts of the town council while demanding for the release of National Unity Platform-NUP party presidential Candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi.

Judith Akello, the District Police Commander Kyotera says that through their intelligence network they managed to identify and arrest some of the ring leaders.

Since the protests started on Wednesday, the police and the army have been engaged in running battles with the protesters.

Akello says that the protesters burnt car tyres, logs in the middle of the road disrupting traffic and paralyzing businesses. She added that the group also looted shops and pulled down posters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidates and set them on fire.

Maj. David Matovu, the Resident District Commissioner, says that the police’s preliminary findings indicate that most of the suspects are not residents of Kyotera. He adds that they were transported to Kyotera to purposely lead the protests.

According to Matovu, security personnel have been deployed in all corners of the town council to foil further protests and to arrest perpetrators.

Police are also still hunting for different ring leaders as the town council remains under siege.
