Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Acting Engineer for Roads and Management Eng. Jacob Byamukama says they plan to introduce 80- 100 seater capacity buses under the Green bus route infrastructure to improve passenger transportation in the city.

The project worth USD 240 million that is to be funded by the African Development Bank will see buses use two roads that will be gazetted by stakeholders and they expect the current taxi operators to run them.

The first Green bus route will move from city square, centenary park, Lugogo cricket oval, Kololo secondary school, Kira road police station, Kamwokya market, Mulago hospital, Wandegeya, Watoto and then back to city square.

The second lane will move from City square, Watoto church, Wandegeya, Mulago hospital, Kamwokya market, Kira road police station, Bukoto-Kisasi junction, Ntinda Junction, Ntinda Primary school, Ntinda new market, Spear motors junction and Nakawa Market.

Once their proposal is approved they expect the upgrading of the gazetted lane to begin early January 2020.

However, he didn’t clarify on how they are to handle the congestion challenge.

Meanwhile, KCCA is to upgrade 20 junctions with signage within the five divisions in Kampala with a tune of USD 158.74m fund from the African Development Bank.

Among the junctions and roads that will be upgraded include Port Bell road, Old Port Bell Road, Kasubi Northern By-Pass, Kibuye-Busega Road, Gaba Road/Muyenga Road Junction, Gaba Road/Nsambya Estate Road junction among others.

They will also work on a 46.7Km road length that will involve upgrading, widening, construction of pavements and drainage works, Byamukama says.
