The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga has asked the Democratic Governance Facility-DGF to take interest in the fights between the Fisheries Protection Unit and fishing communities in the country.

The fishermen have repeatedly accused the soldiers deployed to combat illegal fishing practices on Ugandan waters of torture, brutality, extortion and burning their settlement, claims the army denies.

The aggrieved fishermen petitioned the speaker to investigate the conduct of the soldiers which Now, Kadaga wants the DGF to intervene by engaging the army on the way they are handling Ugandans.

The delegation leader and First Secretary Rule of law at the Netherlands embassy, Theo Oltheten, said DGF has a mission to ensure that Ugandans are empowered to engage in democratic Governance.

DGF is a Governance program that provides support to State and non-state actors on democracy, human rights, justice and accountability. DGF is composed of eight Development Partners including Austria, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the European Union.
