The Internal Affairs Ministry has presented to Parliament a justification for a 20% increase in its annual budget.

The presentation was made by the Minister Gen. Jeje Odong while defending his ministry’s policy statement before the defense and internal affairs committee.

Odongo has proposed a total budget of Shs1.262 trillion for the 2019/2020 FY up from Shs1, 055 trillion this year.

He has listed the major priorities for his ministry as service re-engineering and digitalization of key ministry services and processes, completion of the CCTV project, conducting gun finger printing and expansion of verification of all commercial motor vehicles as well as preparation for the 2021 general elections.

Under the proposed budget the Uganda police budget will be increased by 151bn, the directorate of citizenship and immigration control by 44bn and NIRA by 10bnshs.

Odong informed MPs that the challenges facing the ministry include the changing dimension of crime which he explained as cyber crime, the wave of kidnappings and the new form of murders in urban areas. He also cited infrastructural shortfalls like shortage of accommodation leading to overcrowding in facilities and inadequate service delivery.
