Police have confirmed the arrest of several suspects whose number has not yet been revealed, for allegedly causing commotion and setting ablaze cars and properties worth millions of shillings in Yumbe town today.

In a statement released this evening, the Police Spokesperson Emilian Kayima confirms that the situation has been put under control and the force is engaging the bodaboda industry together with the community to avoid such incident to happen against.

This comes after a section of bodaboda riders protested against a previous operation carried out by Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) that aimed at cracking down on commercial motorcycles that were operating without paying taxes to have registration number plates on their bikes.

 

Kayima further says in a scuffle, two people only identified as Gaddafi and Jamal have been injured and rushed to hospital for medical attention yet two vehicles belonging to a Non Government Organization called DANISH Church Aid and a motorcycles for Kululu Sub County Local Government, have been destroyed.

 

According to an official from URA, the authority was informed by some individuals that one of the area Members of Parliament was the force behind the demonstration after statements restricting them from URA from operating.

 

Officials say that since the drive started they have so far collected Shs10.4 trillion and more Shs5.3 trillion is yet to be collected.

Police in the area says they have so far arrested 64 people who were involved in the riots.
