Over 10,000 cases of gender based violence have been reported from January to April 2020.

According to statistics from the Uganda police force criminal investigation directorate 47% were cases of domestic violence, 43% were for defilement and 5.6% were for rape.

This has been revealed by the minister of state for gender and cultural affairs Peace Mutuuzo at the Uganda media center while launching the 16 days of activism campaign against gender based violence highlighting that Uganda has registered 161 cases of murders resulting from domestic violence and many cases are not reported.

However the minister didn’t reveal the districts where these cases were reported from .

Mutuuzo noted that during covid19 experienced high levels of teenage pregnancy and child marriages thus appealing to parents not to be convinced by men to take their children as a result of wealth.

The 2020 global theme for the campaign is “orange the world, fund, respond, prevent  and collect” and the launch is being held at Budaka saza ground in Budaka district.
